The most reliable approach is a dual-storage setup: your NVR records to local hard drives as normal, while important footage segments are automatically pushed to a secondary NAS or cloud storage. For high-risk businesses (retail, hospitality, cash handling), a cloud backup of at least 7 days of key camera footage provides an off-site copy that survives physical damage to your premises.
A NAS (Network Attached Storage) is a dedicated storage device connected to your local network. It's ideal for businesses that need fast, local access to large amounts of data, such as CCTV footage backups. Synology and QNAP are the two most popular brands, offering easy-to-use management interfaces and optional cloud sync. A small 2-bay Synology NAS with two drives in RAID-1 provides redundancy and costs significantly less than a full server.
A disaster recovery plan documents exactly what steps to take when your IT systems fail — which systems to restore first, where the backups are located, who is responsible for what, and how long recovery should take.
