Smart door lock installation Auckland

What smart door locks do — and why installation matters

A smart door lock replaces a physical key with a credential you manage digitally: a PIN, a phone app, a fingerprint, or an NFC card. The practical result is that you can let someone into your home or office without being present, revoke access the moment you no longer want someone to have it, and see a log of who entered when — all from your phone.

The installation is the part that most people underestimate. A smart lock mounted on a flimsy door frame, a door with worn latches, or a poorly aligned strike plate is not secure regardless of the encryption on the credential. Comsys assesses the door hardware, frame condition, and lock alignment before recommending a specific product. We supply and install the lock, configure the app, create the initial access codes, and walk you through daily management.

  • Airbnb locks — guest codes generated per booking, auto-expiring after check-out; no key handovers
  • Office smart locks — staff PIN or mobile access, audit log of every entry, admin control from your phone
  • Remote unlock systems — unlock from anywhere via WiFi-connected lock or intercom integration
  • PIN code access — unique codes per user, time-limited or permanent, revokable without changing hardware
  • Bluetooth smart locks — phone-based proximity unlock; no internet required for local entry
  • WiFi-enabled locks — remote management, real-time notifications, and remote unlock from any location

Smart lock features and use cases

Not all smart locks are alike. The right choice depends on whether you need remote access, how many people need codes, whether the property is a rental, and what happens if the internet is down. Here is how we think through the decision for each site:

  • Temporary guest access — codes that work only between check-in and check-out dates; ideal for holiday homes and short-term rentals
  • Auto-lock scheduling — door automatically locks at a set time each evening; no more wondering if you locked up
  • Smart deadbolt installations — replaces the existing deadbolt while reusing the existing door prep; minimal carpentry required on most NZ timber doors
  • Fingerprint access — for homes and small offices where PINs feel cumbersome; biometric access without credential sharing risk
  • Emergency key override — all smart locks we install include a physical key cylinder as a backup; you are never locked out if the battery dies
  • Integration with intercoms and access control — smart locks can pair with a video doorbell or intercom so you see the visitor and unlock in one step

Smart door lock FAQ

What is a smart door lock?

A smart door lock is an electronic lock that replaces a physical key with one or more digital credentials: a PIN code entered on a keypad, a mobile app (via Bluetooth or WiFi), an NFC card or fob, or a fingerprint. The lock can be managed remotely — adding or removing codes, checking the entry log, locking or unlocking — without being at the door. Most smart locks also include a physical key cylinder as a fallback.

Can I use my phone to unlock my door?

Yes. WiFi-connected locks (Yale, Schlage Encode) can be unlocked from anywhere via a phone app as long as the lock has a WiFi connection. Bluetooth locks (most other models) can be unlocked when your phone is within Bluetooth range — typically 5–10 metres. Some locks auto-unlock as your phone approaches the door. We configure and test the app on your devices during the installation appointment.

Are smart locks safe?

Professional-grade smart locks use AES-128 or AES-256 encrypted Bluetooth or WiFi communications, making signal interception impractical. The main security variable is the door and frame behind the lock: a deadbolt on a hollow-core door with a weak strike plate is easily bypassed regardless of the electronics. Comsys checks frame integrity, strike plate quality, and door alignment before installing any smart lock. We will tell you plainly if the door needs reinforcing first.

What smart locks work well for Airbnb in NZ?

Yale Assure and Schlage Encode are the most common for NZ Airbnb properties — both integrate with Airbnb’s smart lock platform so guest codes are generated automatically from booking data and expire at check-out. Nuki is a good option where you can’t change the visible hardware (older properties, body-corporate rules). We configure the Airbnb integration as part of the installation, so the system is running from day one.

Do smart locks work if there’s no internet?

Yes, for locally stored credentials. PIN codes and Bluetooth credentials stored in the lock’s memory continue to work without internet. What stops working is remote unlock from your phone (which requires WiFi), and real-time notifications. If the internet is down, someone with a valid PIN or Bluetooth credential can still enter normally. A physical key backup always works regardless of power or internet status.
