The risk profile of an Auckland warehouse

Warehouse risk is concentrated on three things: tool and machinery theft (most common in trade-supply and automotive), inventory loss (most common in distribution and FMCG), and after-hours yard access by unauthorised vehicles. The break point is rarely the office front door — it’s usually the perimeter fence, an unsecured roller door, or a back gate left open by the last person out. Internal shrinkage from staff or contractors is a smaller-frequency but harder-to-detect risk that good camera and access design helps with.

How we design a warehouse system

For a typical warehouse or trade-supply yard (500–3,000 m²), the standard scope is perimeter CCTV with ColorVu / Full-Color for night-time identification, ANPR at the main vehicle entry, dock-level cameras at every loading bay, an alarm panel with dual-tech sensors in the warehouse and PIRs in the office, and access control on the warehouse roller door rather than just the pedestrian door. Larger sites (5,000 m²+, multi-bay DCs) use Inner Range Integriti or Avigilon for integrated CCTV / alarm / access on a single platform with audited logs.

Insurance, AS/NZS 2201, and chain-of-custody

NZ insurance for warehouses and industrial sites typically requires a professionally installed alarm to AS/NZS 2201 (the alarm-installation standard most NZ insurers reference) and a documented commissioning record. Comsys provides a written commissioning record on every install you can hand straight to your broker. For high-value-stock sites, insurers may also require minimum camera coverage at dock-level and minimum alarm response (typically connection to a third-party monitoring station with documented response SLA).

For sites that handle regulated goods (food and beverage, pharma, hazardous materials, electronics with serial-tracking), CCTV often forms part of the chain-of-custody audit trail. We document each camera’s purpose, field of view, retention, and access controls in your commissioning pack so the system meets HACCP, GMP, or other audit requirements without needing post-hoc evidence. Footage retention is typically 60–90 days for regulated-goods sites.

Five-day install scheduled in two stages so warehouse operations weren’t interrupted.

How does ANPR help an industrial site?

ANPR (automatic number-plate recognition) cameras at vehicle entries capture every plate entering or leaving with a searchable record. For warehouses with regular delivery, contractor, and staff vehicle traffic, this is invaluable for incident review — you can search recorded footage by plate or time and confirm which truck or van was on-site at any moment. ANPR can also link to access control so unrecognised plates are denied or flagged at the gate.

Do you install for AS/NZS 2201 alarm compliance?

Yes. AS/NZS 2201 is the standard most NZ insurers reference for intruder alarms. We install to the standard’s technical requirements (sensor placement, panel configuration, sounder requirements, comms paths) and provide a written commissioning record on every install. The record is what your insurer or broker typically wants to see; it documents the system, sensor coverage, panel configuration, and test results.

When is Inner Range Integriti or Avigilon worth it over Paxton + Hikvision?

For sites with 30+ cameras, multi-platform integration needs (CCTV + alarm + access on one user interface), or specific compliance / audit requirements, Inner Range Integriti and Avigilon scale better than smaller-brand NVRs and access systems. For sites under 20 cameras and standard alarm/access scope, Paxton Net2 + Hikvision or Dahua is typically lower cost with no real loss of capability. We’ll quote both options where they’re both viable.

How long should we keep warehouse CCTV footage?

Around 60–90 days is typical for warehouse and industrial use, longer than the residential default because incident discovery (theft, damage, dispatch disputes) often happens days or weeks after the event. Sites with regulated-goods handling (food, pharma, hazardous materials) often retain 90–180 days for chain-of-custody compliance. We size NVR storage to your chosen retention.
