Automated gate installation Auckland

Gate automation for Auckland homes and commercial sites

An automated gate controls vehicle entry at the boundary rather than inside the building — the most effective place to prevent unauthorised access. A properly installed gate system stops vehicles and pedestrians at the perimeter, lets authorised visitors in without manual intervention, and provides an access log of every entry and exit event.

Comsys installs gate automation systems as part of a complete entry solution, typically alongside an intercom, RFID vehicle reader, or ANPR camera. We assess the gate type and weight, the entry approach geometry, the credentials your users need, and whether the gate needs to integrate with an existing access control platform. Everything is installed, tested, and commissioned in writing.

  • Sliding gate motors — the default for residential driveways and commercial entries with level ground; single or dual leaf
  • Swing gate motors — for properties where a sliding gate track is not practical; single or double leaf, underground or surface-mounted operators
  • Boom gates — for car parks, loading docks, and high-throughput commercial entries where vehicle flow speed matters
  • RFID vehicle entry — windscreen tag or vehicle-mounted transponder opens the gate without stopping; common for staff car parks and warehouses
  • Remote gate access — smartphone app, key fob, or intercom call grants entry from inside the building or remotely
  • Smart gate automation — integration with access control so the same credential used at the office door also opens the gate

Commercial barrier and boom gate system

Commercial barrier systems and vehicle access control

Commercial vehicle access requires more than a gate motor and a remote. Throughput, audit trails, anti-tailgating measures, and integration with HR or visitor management systems all affect the design. Comsys installs commercial barrier systems that handle high volumes of vehicles reliably, report every entry event to a management platform, and can be administered remotely by facilities or security staff.

  • Commercial barrier systems — FAAC, CAME, BFT, and Nice operators rated for high-duty-cycle commercial use
  • Automatic bollards — retractable bollards for pedestrian zones, building entrances, and anti-ram protection
  • Vehicle access systems — RFID, ANPR (number-plate recognition), or intercom-triggered entry for authorised vehicles
  • Loop detectors — inductive loops in the ground surface that detect vehicle presence; used for automatic exit and anti-crush safety
  • Safety edges and photocells — obstruction detection on all gate and barrier systems we install; required by AS/NZS 60335-2-103 for automated gates
  • UPS battery backup — gates and barriers continue to operate during power outages; critical for sites where the entry cannot be left open

Intercom and access control integration

A gate motor on its own is just a motor. The value comes from how it integrates with the rest of your entry system. Comsys installs gate automation as part of a coordinated entry design:

What does gate automation cost in Auckland?

Gate and barrier automation FAQ

What types of automated gates are available?

The main types for Auckland properties are sliding gates (the gate rolls horizontally on a track — good for level drives with sufficient run space), swing gates (the gate leaf swings inward or outward — good where there is no room for a track), and vertical pivot lift gates (for very tight spaces or high-security perimeters). Boom gates and automatic bollards are the commercial equivalents where vehicle control rather than perimeter closure is the priority. We recommend based on the driveway geometry, gate weight, and usage volume during the site visit.

How do RFID vehicle access systems work?

RFID vehicle access uses a transponder (a small passive or active tag) mounted on the vehicle windscreen or on the driver’s key fob. A reader at the gate detects the transponder and, if it matches an entry in the approved database, triggers the gate or barrier to open — usually without the driver needing to stop. Access can be restricted to specific days and times, and every read is logged. RFID is the standard for staff car parks and warehouse yards where high throughput and hands-free entry matter.

Can I open my gate with my phone?

Yes. Most modern gate motor controllers support WiFi or Bluetooth connectivity, allowing you to open and close the gate via a smartphone app. For sites integrated with an access management platform (Paxton, Inner Range), the gate can be released by an authorised user from any web browser or phone. Intercom integration adds video verification so you can see who is at the gate before releasing it, from wherever you are.

How reliable are automated gates in wet NZ weather?

Auckland’s climate is generally benign for gate automation compared to colder climates, but rain and coastal air do affect equipment longevity. All operators we install are rated for outdoor use (IP44 minimum, IP55 for exposed coastal sites). Sliding gate motors are particularly well-suited to NZ conditions as they avoid the mechanical complexity of hinge-mounted underground operators in wet soil. We recommend annual servicing — particularly lubricating the track and checking cable and photocell alignment — as the main maintenance task for reliable long-term operation.

What maintenance do automated gates need?

Most automated gate systems need a simple annual service: lubricate the track and rollers (sliding gates) or hinge points and arms (swing gates), check photocell and safety-edge alignment, test battery backup, inspect cables and limit switches, and verify the motor controller firmware is current. Boom gates in high-traffic commercial environments benefit from six-monthly inspection given their duty cycle. We provide service agreements for all gate systems we install; a documented service history is also increasingly expected by commercial property insurers.
